Bruce Dufty presenting great words of wisdom

Stages of Life and Retirement - Sound Advice from Bruce Dufty

Ready Set Retire

Bruce quietly and systematically walked us through the human life cycle from birth to retirement (death is supposed to conclude the cycle but time did not permit this natural eventuality).
Each stage depicts certain characteristics, and our progress through and adaptation to the different stages is inevitably conditioned by family and social values and beliefs.
Retirement is one stage of the cycle which can sometimes appear daunting to many people.
Change is confronting and for many of us diverting from our established routines is inconceivable. We must think of retirement like a normal part of the cycle, not some ‘exotic’ unknown which will revolutionize the world.
He related examples of challenges and victories from empirical observations supported by independent studies to inform us that the stage of human life cycle, usually 50’s to 60’s when most of us are contemplating retirement is the most productive stage. It is the stage of relationship and wisdom, accrued from life experiences and challenges. In the 60’s to 70’s we go through the stage of changes, work, home, family, routines etc.

Somebody who is having trouble retiring

Club Mmebers listening intently to Bruce

It is important that we all make the most of our retirement- and the key to this according to him is the 3 Ps  – Preparation, Preparation & Planning
Bruce went on to give us some tips towards successful retirement such as;
  • There is never enough money to retire – cut your coat according to your cloth;
  • The holidays can’t go on forever;
  • Minimize the amount of changes you make at the same time- e.g. don’t change your house, friends etc all at the same time/day you retire;
  • Discuss with your partner and family and try not to step on each others’ toes;
  •  Find a hobby, activity etc to maintain the household equilibrium;
  • Get involved with community and others – being a Rotarian can be a great bonus;
  • Happy & successful retirement – and share your wealth of knowledge and wisdom with others
Thank you Bruce for a factual and very insightful presentation interspersed with fantastic shots of those wonderful locations we can dream of visiting when we retire. YOU are the best example of a successful retiree.
