Rotary and the Environment (Trees) National Tree Day

Rotary International President, Ian Riseley, has stated that protecting the environment and curbing climate change are essential to Rotary’s goal of sustainable service. "Environmental degradation and global climate change are serious threats to everyone. They are having a disproportionate impact on those who are most vulnerable, those to whom Rotary has the greatest responsibility. Yet environmental issues rarely register on the Rotary agenda".

Ian Riseley also said "the time is long past when environmental sustainability can be dismissed as not Rotary’s concern. It is, and must be, everyone’s concern

The RI President challenged every Rotary Club to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 July and Earth Day on 22 April 2018. Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which slows global warming.

Importantly Ian Riseley said. “I believe the greater result will be a Rotary that recognizes our responsibility not only to the people on our planet, but to the planet itself.”

National Tree Day for 2017 is:

  • Schools Tree Day Friday 28th July 2017 and
  • National Tree Day Sunday 30th July 2017

The Rotary Club of Western Endeavour has several projects relating to the environment and planting trees. Every year for the past 5 years Western Endeavour has joined with the Rotary Clubs of Cunderdin and Quairading planting trees in salt affected areas on farms around the towns. About 8,500 trees have been planted each year and the success rate is about 80% surviving after two years! Also Western Endeavour helps the "Friends of Lake Claremont" volunteer group and part of that help is planting trees and removing weeds. There have been 10's of thousands of trees planted where the old golf course once existed. It is really worth the effort to see how the area has been transformed back to bush land.
